(Trick created by Spencer Berry)
Disclaimer: There seem to be a few variations of Breath floating around. This
page simply describes one of ‘em, which is, more or less, the correct version.
It’s not necessarily exactly the same as whut you see in the video at Sector
Y, though.

This trick uses the same mount as Pure 143. Basically, it’s the same hold
you’d be in after the first hop of Kwyjibo, only your hands are uncrossed.
After the mount, you want to pop the yo-yo off the string and let it swing
around your left index finger in a counterclockwise direction. It will complete
a full circle, but will hit the front/left string before swinging all the way
around ( like a 1 ½ mount ). Now drop the front loop of string off of your
right index finger. Swing the yo-yo around your left hand in a clockwise
direction ( as you would in Cold Fusion ) so that you’re in a 1 ½ mount. This
is the version of the mount where your hands are uncrossed, BTW.
It’s time for the first loop release move. The index finger of your left
hand is extended. Now you need to extend the other three fingers. There are two
strings running between your hands. You need to pluck/pinch the back string (
the string closest to your body ) with your left thumb. Watch the video to see
what I mean. This plucking move is the key to the whole trick. Annnnd, you will
not release the string till quite a while later in the trick. Okay, swing the
yo-yo around your left hand in a clockwise direction. Essentially, the yo-yo is
revolving in a complete circle. Picture that circle as a clock. It will be
important later.
After the yo-yo completes it’s circle, you need to drop the loop of string
off of your right index finger ( your thumb should still be pinching one of the
strings ). Almost simultaneously, twist your left wrist inwards towards your
body. Before you do this, your left index finger will have been pointing away
from you. Afterwards, it should be parallel to your body; pointing towards your
other hand. With some practice, you should be able to drop the loop while the
yo-yo is at about 12 o’clock position in it’s revolution and twist your
wrist before it completes the circle. Anyway, the wrist movement will move the
loop of string from where it was to the other side of the yo-yo, the side
farthest from you. Once the loop has switched sides, catch it with your right
index finger, like a suicide.
Hopefully that all made sense :-)
Swing the yo-yo in a huge clockwise circle. As you do, switch hand positions,
left over right. Your left index finger should now be pointing towards you.
Aight, after the yo-yo has completed the revolution, uncross your hands and
twist your left wrist back into its normal position for yo-yo tricks. The hold
you’re in now is very similar to a 1 ½ mount. Swing the yo-yo around your
left hand in a clockwise direction and let it fall behind all of the strings.
Now it’s time for the second loop release of Breath, which is basically the
opposite of the first one.
Let go of the loop of string on your right index finger with a snap of your
right wrist. It should travel towards your left hand and around the yo-yo. Catch
it with your right index finger. ( note: In order for the loop to make it all of
the way around, you may need to twist your right wrist slightly ). Swing the
yo-yo around your left index finger in a counterclockwise direction. Okay, now
you’re just in a 1 ½ mount except your left thumb is still pinching that one
string. Swing the yo-yo around your finger one more time. The next move is a
suicide. Swing the yo-yo up and towards your right hand, letting go of the loop
that is on your left index finger and also the one on your right index finger.
Catch the suicide with your right index and you’ll purty much be in a trapeze.
Your left hand should be controlling a loop of string, seein’ as it’s
still pinched by your thumb. You are going to use this loop to put the yo-yo in
a pseudo-Mach 5ish hold. The loop consists of what I shall refer to as the front
string and back string. The front string is the segment coming directly from
your yo-yo finger. The back string ends up wrapping around your left index
finger. Swing the loop towards the yo-yo. Let the front string swing in front of
the yo-yo and enter the gap on the side of the yo-yo closest to your right hand.
The back string will simply enter the gap on the side of the yo-yo closest to
your left hand. I hope that made sense.
The string formation should look somewhat like a sidestyle Mach 5. You can
now release the string you were pinching with your thumb. Then drop the loop of
string off of your left index finger.
The yo-yo will now not be mounted on ANY string. Instead, it should look
sorta like a missed trapeze. Pinch the string with your right index and middle
fingers. Swing the yo-yo up and around your right index finger in a clockwise
direction. Keep going and let it fall down…your left index finger will
intercept the string ( translation: act like you’re throwing a 1 ½ mount ).
Okay, cuz you’re still pinching the string, the bottom string segment running
between your hands will be slack…and the yo-yo should still be moving; it is
swinging towards your right hand.
Hook the string coming directly from your yo-yo finger ( the slack loop )
with your right thumb. There should now be a couple of strings running between
your hands as well as the slack loop that your right hand is holding. The slack
loop will have two strings: one close to you and one further away. Let the yo-yo
hit the one that’s further away and release the pinch with your right middle
finger. ( note: With practice, you’ll actually hook the string and land the
yo-yo at purty much the same moment, then release your right middle finger right
after. These three steps should mostly look like one move ). Anywho, you’ll be
in the cool looking hold that’s at about 0:10 in the video. Pop the yo-yo up
in the air on the inside of the front/top string ( ugh, I hope that made
sense…the pop-up should be fairly obvious anyway, when you’re doin’ the
trick ). While the yo-yo is in the air, release the string on your thumb and
drop the string off of your left index finger.
Okay, when you popped the yo-yo up, a string should have fallen out of the
gap. So, after dropping the strings and stuff, you will simply land a trapeze.
If the string happened to not fall out of the gap, you will end up in a
mutation. Just keep practicing and you’ll be able to get the trapeze every
time.
That’s the end of Breath. Good luck!!!
