Sadly, even though the Philippines is part of yoyo history, only a few yoyo brands are readily available to yoyo players here. In these pages you'll see some of these yoyos. Most of them are simple ones and only quite recently did high quality yoyos become available to the general public without having to resort to online ordering. From what I've observed, yoyo brands come in batches to our shores. Locally and China-made simpler yoyo's (fixed-axle, auto-return, light-up ones, etc.) have always been a staple product in bazaars and night markets since time immemorial. Cartoon, soda, promotional, company and movie yoyo-product tie-ins have been around for some time too (hey, I've seen Powerpuff Girls, Toy Story, and most Disney-inspired yoyos all over the place).

This is an example of a locally made fixed-axle wooden yoyo usually sold in tourist shops. It's made from a dark local hardwood called "kamagong". Tough and heavy, you can either break a window or someone's skull if your string breaks. The kamagong hardwood (or some refer to it as ironwood) is also used in making martial arts weapons like the nunchucks, bokken wooden swords and bo staffs. I bought this years ago and it's still fine. There are still some of these wherever you go in the Philippines, there's even a smaller version affixed on top of a pen. |
